      The Relationships Between Humans and Animals in Modern Zoos
      \n– From an Artist’s Viewpoint<\/h3>\n

       <\/p>\n

      This research focuses on the relationship between humans and animals, and\u00a0discusses how modern zoos insert their influences from the 19th century to date.\u00a0Under this premise, the author, as an artist who deeply involved in the zoo,\u00a0explores ways to better improve the relationship between humans and animals\u00a0through engaging arts in zoos.<\/p>\n

      Chapter 1 examines the relationship between humans and animals during\u00a0Industrial Revolution analyzing the theories of three philosophers. In the 17th\u00a0century, Ren\u00e9 Descartes advocated the “animal mechanism”, claiming that\u00a0animals do not have feelings, which stirred up much debate at the time. On the\u00a0other hand, Jeremy Bentham argued that animals suffer too, in which he used\u00a0“utilitarianism” theory to defend the rights of animals. Lastly, in Charles\u00a0Darwin\u2019s Theory of Evolution, he overturned the relationship between humans\u00a0and animals completely.<\/p>\n

      Chapter 2 gives an overview of current situation of animals in modern society,\u00a0and of theories related to animal rights and ethics. The relationship between\u00a0humans and animals have developed further in the 20th century. While the\u00a0issues of animal welfare have been emphasized more than ever before, animals\u2019\u00a0status on the other hand has been significantly lowered due to worldwide\u00a0economic development, exploitation of natural resources, and factory farming. Of\u00a0various theories on contemporary animal ethics, the author selected two relevant\u00a0theorists to illustrate above points: Peter Singer who stemmed from Bentham\u2019s\u00a0theory and elaborated further to discuss animal rights using \u201cpreference\u00a0utilitarianism\u201d; and Tom Regan, who took the Deontology further to include\u00a0animals as the subject of moral ethics.<\/p>\n

      Chapter 3 outlines the history of zoos, and compares the \u201canimaliers\u201din the 19th\u00a0century with the contemporary artists who creates artworks using animals\u2019\u00a0images. Known as one of the first modern zoo, \u201cM\u00e9nagerie du Jardin des Plantes\u201d\u00a0was opened to the public at the beginning of the 19th century. During that time,\u00a0the artists who make animal artworks had the chance to observe wild animals\u00a0closely, sometimes even got to participate in the dissection of dead animals. As a\u00a0result, animal sculptures were created with lively characteristics just as\u00a0human portraits. In addition, the development of animal welfare discourse also\u00a0fueled people\u2019s interest towards wild animals and nature. This connection\u00a0between zoos and artists barely exist in contemporary art. In the 20th century,\u00a0modern zoos, as the token of\u201cark of species\u201d, play pivotal role in education,\u00a0research, and as an advocate to speak out for animals.<\/p>\n

      Chapter 4 illustrates how the author drew from her own practices and\u00a0experiences to improve the relationships between humans and animals through\u00a0the zoo, and how it influenced her own artistic creation. As an artist who make\u00a0animal artworks, practices in the zoo influenced the author\u2019s choice of material\u00a0and the form profoundly. In particular, the experience of making taxidermies in\u00a0the zoo has made the author realize that death is emotionally and ethically\u00a0heavy, be it animals\u2019 or humans\u2019. This also makes the author reconsider and\u00a0reexamine the relationships between humans and animals.<\/p>\n

      Nowadays, while the issues regarding nature and environment are receiving\u00a0more and more attention, the modern society is actually diverging further away\u00a0from the nature. Like the animalier from the 19th century who\u00a0successfully piqued people\u2019s interests towards animals, the author hopes to start\u00a0a movement that rallies people to become animaliers of this century and make\u00a0humans and nature closer again.<\/p>\n
