      Representation of “Classical Antiquity” in Japanese Modern Art: Focusing on the Images of Emperor Jinmu, Prince Sh\u014dtoku, and Empress K\u014dmy\u014d<\/h3>\n

      This study examines Japan\u2019s creation of its own “classical antiquity” tradition for establishing a modern nation, from the viewpoint of art history. Focusing on Emperor Jinmu, Prince Sh\u014dtoku, and Empress K\u014dmy\u014d as the most significant figures that represent \u201cclassical antiquity\u201d, this study investigates the formation and development of iconography between 1868 and 1945, by examining visual images of and texts written about these figures.<\/p>\n

      Chapter 1 studies the background of the formation of classical antiquity representations in the following four aspects. Section 1 investigates narratives on Japanese art history, especially the ones by Tenshin Okakura, and points out that, after 1900, the Tokyo Imperial Museum provided painters with concrete images of classical antiquity through exhibitions and publications of exhibition catalogs. Section 2 reviews the studies by Japanese archeologists who worked at the Tokyo Imperial Museum and shows that their views on archeological history permeated Japanese intellectual thought in the early twentieth century. Section 3 discusses the remarks on antiquity in literature such as Many\u014dsh\u016b and its adaptation in modern times. Section 4 analyzes the images of ancient terra cotta figurines, those of subjects representing the Tempy\u014d Period, as well as warrior figures that are all depicted in works of art, and discusses the iconographic features of such artworks.<\/p>\n

      Chapter 2 investigates the images of Emperor Jinmu. Section 1 summarizes the past research on Emperor Jinmu in historiography and points out that the number of publications on his eastern expedition and his imperial edicts increased, from 1934 on, and the idea of “Hakkouichiu (all eight corners of the world under one roof; the universal brotherhood)” of the Imperial edicts came to be honored highly. Section 2 examines the views of Chigaku Tanaka, a Nichirenist, whose idea of \u201cHakkouichiu\u201d combined with Jinmu became the ideal image of Japan that was to morally unify the world in the Sh\u014dwa Era. Section 3 discusses the features of modern depictions of Emperor Jinmu. Section 4 analyzes figurative expressions of Emperor Jinmu by Hisakazu Takenouchi, a sculptor who had a close relationship with Chigaku Tanaka.<\/p>\n

      Chapter 3 studies the images of Prince Sh\u014dtoku. Section 1 focuses on modern biographies of him. Section 2 then analyses the activities of organizations honoring Prince Sh\u014dtoku. Section 3 investigates the images of Prince Sh\u014dtoku in artworks. Since the Meiji Era, artists often depicted his image as a \u201cmerciful\u201d figure in paintings. Section 4 discusses how the image of the prince\u2019s mercy came to be depicted based on the construction of four sub-temple institutions, medicine collections, and the Kataokayama legend.<\/p>\n

      Chapter 4 discusses the images Empress K\u014dmy\u014d. Section 1 analyzes images of the Empress, from the perspective of imperial compassionism. Section 2 examines artworks depicting the Empress. Section 3 investigates the iconography of Reminiscences (1909) and K\u014dmy\u014d (1919), by Hiromitsu Nakazawa, pointing out that it is highly likely that he depicted Empress K\u014dmy\u014d in the form of an Eleven-headed Kannon statue.<\/p>\n

      Significant outcomes of this dissertation show the deep connection between the representations of classical antiquity, in the images of Emperor Jinmu, Prince Sh\u014dtoku, and Empress K\u014dmy\u014d, and the formation of national consciousness in modern times and clarify the details, through the thorough analysis of various artworks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
