      The purpose of this<\/span> study is to clarify the position of Shomei<\/span> Tomatsu in the postwar history of Japanese photography by tracing the transition of the \u201cGun-shashin\u201d methodology that he advocated and practiced as a way of \u201ccombining photographs,\u201d and by clarifying its significance. The subjects of analysis In this study are his major photobooks published until the end of the 1990s.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      The \u201cGun-shashin\u201d as an editorial technique for photobooks creates new meanings by \u201ccross-fertilizing\u201d photographs that have individual meanings. This idea stems from criticism of \u201cPhoto-essay\u201d in Photojournalism, which flourished before and during World War II, in which photographs and text were arranged according to a predetermined story. In contrast to \u201cphoto-essay,\u201d which allow the reader to interpret the meaning as intended by the photographer (editor), \u201cGun<\/span>–<\/span>shasin\u201d is an editing technique that creates a direction of meaning for the photobook as a whole by allowing the reader to read arbitrary meanings that inevitably arise from the relationships among the photographs, and by creating the illusion that the reader is reading the photographs \u2018freely\u2019.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      The meaning of the photobook as a whole not only contributes to the expression of the individual themes of each photobook, but is also a vector that invites the reader’s gaze into the shadows of \u201cprimitive Japan\u201d and \u201cpostwar Japan,\u201d and the ambiguous and fluid boundaries of \u201cJapan-nation\u201d as a totality of these images. In other words, \u201cGun-shashin\u201d is a rhetoric to recapture the nation of Japan as a kind of \u201cherd\/group\/flock, etc.\u201d.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      Based on the above perspectives, this study presents a new view of \u201cGun-shashin\u201d by examining how \u201cGun-shashin\u201d has changed and been renewed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
