about the Acceptance of Western Music in Modern Okinawa;<br \/>\nA Look at Traditional Okinawan Music.<\/h3>\n<p>In this study, I have tried to explain the process of Okinawans\u2019 acceptance of Western music since the Ryukyu\/Okinawa haihanchiken period (1879) and to clarify some features [or elements] of Okinawan cognitive processes in the restructuring of its people\u2019s identity.<\/p>\n<p>Chapter 1 surveys two categories of historical research: the cultural modernization of Okinawa, and the other the introduction of Western music to Japan. The chapter draws attention to two serious problems in those areas of historical research.<\/p>\n<p>In chapter 2, I describe Okinawan music teachers\u2019 practical methods, mainly in the Okinawa Prefectural Normal School. I studied how they taught singing and the government-prescribed school songs, how they composed and how they held concerts. In this chapter I surveyed the Meiji to Early Sh\u014dwa eras, not only regarding the education system but also educational policy, but also three historical turning points in the implementation of music education, i.e., 1904 and 1911 and 1930. On top of that, I draw attention to the most important musical educators SONOYAMA Tamihei, MIYARA Ch\u014dh\u014d and YAMAUCHI Seihin.<\/p>\n<p>Chapter 3 considers change in music ideas and values in Okinawa. The work of NISHIHARA Minoru proposed four phases as a framework for defining the modern concept of \u201cthings Japanese\u201d, and those have been adopted in this chapter as a means of comparing musical changes in Okinawa with those in mainland Japan. It is clear that Okinawans accepted ideas established early in the Meiji era by IZAWA Shuji and K\u014cZU Senzabur\u014d, ideas based on Darwinism and Confucianism. Using such intellectual frameworks as tools, the Japanese discussed how to improve traditional Japanese music. Alongside those developments, Okinawans were discussing how to improve traditional Ryukyuan music. The emergence of the concept \u201cthings Ryukyuan\u201d was taking place on the main island of Okinawa in the Meiji 40s, while another development in the Yaeyama region had been emerging since 1922. As a result, there were two different identities within modern Okinawa society.<\/p>\n<p>Chapter 4 deals with how traditional Okinawan music was transcribed by the use of the Western staff notation. Because there was a deep academic interest in cultural influences between Japan and Okinawa, Okinawan traditional music needed to be notated or to be recorded according to Western staff notation. However, there were very considerable difficulties in notating traditional Okinawan melodies in that way, but despite that both MIYARA and YAMAUCHI stuck to its use.<\/p>\n<p>Chapter 5 discusses the relationship of musical creation and tradition. Some views on musical composition emerged in Japan and this chapter focuses in particular on three different kinds of concept among them, viz.: kokugaku, ch\u014dwagaku, and sin-nihon-ongaku. SONOYAMA was the first in Okinawa to compose music using melodies originating from traditional Ryukyuan music. Some musical works by MIYARA and YAMAUCHI tended towards the use of melodies from Yaeyama folk songs, but their compositions were not only intended to represent the idea of \u201cthings Yaeyama\u201d but also to represent the idea of \u201cthings Japanese\u201d, or to create sin-nihon-ongaku. Despite use of Yaeyama melodies, both the compositions of MIYARA and YAMAUCHI were somewhat influenced by TANABE Hisao\u2019s works which had been intended to create sin-nihon-ongaku.<\/p>\n<p>Chapter 6 explores musical activities within Okinawan society, especially focusing on the organisation of concerts. Those concerts were categorised into three types as follows: those organised by government and nongovernmental bodies, then those only by nongovernmental bodies, and the last arranged as an aspect of school education. The third category was intended to enlighten pupils and the general public in Okinawa, and thus they appeared initially as something completely out of the ordinary as regards the pattern of concert programming. In that way, various kinds of traditional music in Okinawa (conventional Ryukyuan music in the form of Yaeyama and Ryukyuan folk songs) and newly created folksongs were introduced into musical concerts held for schools, thereby raising the Okinawa awareness of their own musical identity.<\/p>\n<p>Chapter 7 concludes this thesis. Since the Russo-Japanese War (1904-05), Okinawan people had been turning to positive acceptance of the western music and the modernized values, and their mentality finally showed up in cultural differences or cultural localities in Okinawa. As a result, accepting Western music in Okinawa was the most effective way to reconstruct the pre-modernized Ryukyuan musical tradition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"tab_div_st0k\" class=\"tab_content\" aria-labeledby=\"tab_li_st0k\" aria-hidden=\"true\"
