Refinement: A Study on Musical Elements<br \/>\nof the \u201cRefined Taiwanese Opera\u201d, Jingzhi Gezaixi<\/h3>\n<p>Gezaixi (\u6b4c\u4ed4\u622f) is the only Taiwanese drama that can traces its origin to Taiwan. Under the influences of the Japanese rule and later of the Kuomintang\u2019s Han-centric cultural policies, along with changes in the pubic taste for entertainment, Gezaixi continued to be performed. When the trend towards \u201cindigenization\u201d became a force in the 1980&#8217;s, the &#8220;Taiwan born&#8221; Gezaixi was re-evaluated by intellectuals, and it&#8217;s performing community\u2019s search for artistic refinement began. As a result, Jingzhi Gezaixi (\u7cbe\u7dfb\u6b4c\u4ed4\u622f) or \u201crefined\u201d Gezaixi, was formed. And since the 1990s, it has gained popularity.<\/p>\n<p>In this thesis, I examine the musical elements of Jingzhi Gezaixi and the \u201clocality\u201d embedded in it. My examination draws upon analysis of changing social conditions in modern Taiwan, interviews with \u201cmusic designers,\u201d and analysis of musical elements of three pieces performed by a Taiwanese opera company and troupes.<\/p>\n<p>Chapter 1 lays out the objectives of the thesis, presents literature review, and discusses the methods employed in my research.<\/p>\n<p>Chapter 2 provides an overview of the development of Gezaixi and examines its important characteristics. It is discussed how the development of Gezaixi has been deeply influenced by the social changes taking place in modern Taiwan. It is argued that the sense of closeness produced through the music of Gezaixi has an inherited tendency to fall into mannerism.<\/p>\n<p>Chapter 3 explores the musical aspects of Jingzhi Gezaixi based upon interviews with \u201cmusic designers.\u201d It is pointed out that the traditional musical elements of Gezaixi and the direction each opera company\/troupe takes are given the most priority when producing a Jingzhi Gezaixi piece. It is thus argued that the &#8220;refinement&#8221; in Jingzhi Gezaixi means both \u201ctraditional succession\u201d and \u201cdevelopment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chapter 4 examines The Mismatched Marriage (\u932f\u914d\u59fb\u7e01) by the Lan-Yang Taiwanese Opera Company\uff08\u5b9c\u862d\u770c\u7acb\u862d\u967d\u622f\u5287\u56e3\uff09, a public opera company from Yilan County. While incorporating new creative melody lines, this piece is characterized by its embodiment of the traditional music style. It is argued that the company\u2019s emphasis on \u201ctraditional succession\u201d is related to the fact that the Yilan County is considered as the \u201cbirthplace of Gezaixi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chapter 5 focuses on Autumn Ode (\u79cb\u98a8\u8fad) by the Ho-Lo Taiwanese Opera Troupe\uff08\u6cb3\u6d1b\u6b4c\u5b50\u622f\u56e3\uff09. Originally created for TV entertainment purposes, the troupe is capable of integrating novel musical elements. The piece is however characterized by the use of traditional melody lines as the source for the creation of new melody lines. Given that the troupe is strongly influenced by the emerging Taiwanese consciousness, this piece can be regarded as an example of \u201cdevelopment within traditional succession\u201d .<\/p>\n<p>Chapter 6 discusses Beautiful Dream of Youth (\u9752\u6625\u7f8e\u5922) by the Chun-Mei Taiwanese Opera Troupe\uff08\u6625\u7f8e\u6b4c\u5287\u56e3\uff09. While this piece is highly distinctive, characterized by the innovative incorporation of new musical instruments and creative melody lines, the troupe\u2019s adherence to the traditional music is still apparent in the piece. It is argued that the innovative incorporation is not enough for the troupe to gain social acceptance and status in light of the emerging Taiwanese consciousness. This piece can be seen as an example of \u201ctraditional succession within development\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Chapter 7 concludes this thesis. It is argued that while Jingzhi Gezaixi entails the preservation of traditional culture and the development of new artistic expressions in response to the various demands from modern Taiwanese society, it also points to the promulgation of different and localized styles of music in accordance with different artistic directions these opera companies and troupes take within the framework of Gezaixi.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"tab_div_eamv\" class=\"tab_content\" aria-labeledby=\"tab_li_eamv\" aria-hidden=\"true\"
