Narrative Performance of Bangladesh<br \/>\nFocusing on the standpoint of narrator<\/h3>\n<p>Pala Gaan is a widely known secular performing art that is mainly seen in the villages of Mymensingh, Netrokona, Kishoregonj, Comilla and some other districts of Bangladesh. \u201dPala\u201d means a tale and \u201cGaan\u201d stands for song. The story of Pala Gaan is mainly based on true-incidents, folktales, myths or locally popular love stories. In order to depict the story, a narrator called Gaen alone narrates, sings, dances, says dialogues while 5-6 musicians called Dohar accompany him. One among the Dohars is called Dyna who participates in the dialogic portion with Gaen in addition to his performance of singing and playing musical instruments.<\/p>\n<p>As Gaen alone explores the whole story using the above performance devices, the mode of his standpoint seems to change in each portion and it appears to be a significant subject for thorough study. This dissertation attempts to put light on the problem of the standpoint of narrator.<\/p>\n<p>In Chapter 1, history of the traditional storytelling by song in Bangladesh has been studied thoroughly which shows that Pala Gaan was risen by the influence of a very old tradition Panchali, a performance style of medieval Bangladesh.<\/p>\n<p>Chapter 2 asserts the history of research on Pala Gaan. In this chapter, 20th centuries\u2019 significant researches on Pala Gaan has been examined which concludes that those researches mainly focused on the literary feature of the texts of Pala Gaan. This chapter points out the necessity of further study on Pala Gaan from a different point of view.<\/p>\n<p>In chapter 3, in order to clarify the compositional form of this art, a performance text of Gulehormuz and Ganjekul is composed which show the performance features and other details of this performance genre.<\/p>\n<p>Fixed portions of Pala Gaan like Bondona(worshipping God and other subjects in the starting of the performance), Vonita(inserting the names of the poet or narrator) etc. has been analyzed in chapter 4. These portions were studied from the Japanese view point of Kata of daily life in the society.<\/p>\n<p>Chapter 5 deals with the improvisational quality of Pala Gaan. This Chapter studies the performance of Pala Gaan by two well-known Gaens named Islamuddin Palakar from Kishoregonj district and Dilu Boyati from Netrokona district through fieldwork in those regions from 3 July 2006 to 24 July 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Chapter 6 studies the religiosity and secularity of Pala Gaan. It analyzes that the mixture of different religions in this land made the peoples\u2019 belief unique. But as the performance of Pala Gaan is not directly related with the religious rituals, it recognizes that uniqueness of the villagers\u2019 soul and reflects it in its body. In this way, this art becomes secular, respecting all the God and deities in the same body.<\/p>\n<p>In Chapter 7, Gaen\u2019s social position in the structure of the society in Bangladesh is examined. It clarifies that the economical, educational level of Gaen and his religious beliefs causes him to be discriminated by the society.<\/p>\n<p>Chapter 8 studies mainly on the distance of Gaen from the story and the characters of Pala Gaan. In this chapter, it has been clarified that the Gaen\u2019s corresponding basis for grasping the story is related to the village society. Thus, while interpreting the story or the emotions or actions of the characters, Gaen takes peoples\u2019 belief or view as standard to interpret it.<br \/>\nTherefore, the style of Pala Gaan determines the standpoint of narrator. As Pala Gaan prefers the choice of people\u2019s view point most, it seeks narrator to take his standpoint from where he has to grasp the story from people\u2019s view.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"tab_div_zi98\" class=\"tab_content\" aria-labeledby=\"tab_li_zi98\" aria-hidden=\"true\"
