Performing Art in Modern Okinawan Context Abstract<\/h3>\n<p>This thesis attempts to examine the performance and meaning of Wadaiko as a neo-folk performing art in the modern Okinawan context.<\/p>\n<p>Three theoretical perspectives guide this thesis. First, this thesis employs a local-global perspective to highlight prevailing issues Japanese performing arts face in both local and global contexts. Second, it incorporates the perspective of Okinawan positionality to illustrate the relationship between Wadaiko and Okinawan ethnic identity. Third, it employs a performer-centered perspective to describe the role of an individual performer in the shaping of Wadaiko performance.<\/p>\n<p>Chapter One lays out the objectives of the thesis, presents literature review, and, discusses the methods employed in the research. The definitions of terms used and the overall structure of the thesis are also provided.<\/p>\n<p>Chapter Two traces the histories of Wadaiko in both Japanese and North American contexts. It shows how Wadaiko performance, incorporating Western ideologies, emerged as a divergent form of traditional Japanese Taiko performance through mass media, national events, and tourism in post WWII Japan. It also illustrates how Japanese descents in North America embraced Wadaiko as a means to express their ethnic identity to counter the dominant Anglo-Saxon culture.<\/p>\n<p>Chapter Three discusses the relationship between the traditional Okinawan Taiko and Wadaiko. It explains that the transformation of Okinawan Taiko performance from its traditional form into a \u201cperformance show\u201d in the post WWII era set the ground for the emergence of Wadaiko performance in Okinawa after Okinawa\u2019s reversion to Japan in 1972. It agues that Wadaiko performance was incorporated into the genres of Okinawan performing arts because it was able to address Okinawa\u2019s newly obtained identity in relation to mainland Japan.<\/p>\n<p>Chapter Four focuses on Wadaiko events and activities of Okinawa Taiko Renmei, an umbrella organization instrumental in transforming Wadaiko performance into a \u201cneo-folk performing art\u201d in Okinawa from the late 1980s to the mid 1990s. It describes that while Okinawan Wadaiko performers had established their unique performing identity in contrast to \u201cfolk performing arts,\u201d the Ryukyu Kngdom mood\u201d incited by the reconstruction of the Shuri castle in 1992 led people to perceive their Wadaiko performance as a Yamatu (Japanese) performance. This situation has led Okinawan Wadaiko groups to incorporate in their performance both music and choreography which are more expressive of Okinawan ethnic identity.<\/p>\n<p>Chapter Five focuses on \u201cChijinshu Wakatida,\u201d a local Wadaiko performing group in Urasoe city, Okinawa. It shows that while the group\u2019s performance has been influenced by interaction with its Japanese counterparts, its members\u2019 ethnic identity as Okinawan has been transformed through Wadaiko performance from an \u201cimagined identity\u201d to a new \u201cexperienced identity.\u201d It argues that this voluntary group has found new social meanings for its existence and now engages in other social activities in a more localized context.<\/p>\n<p>Chapter six examines the relationship between an individual performer, Mrs. Keiko Higa and the performance of Shimadaiko, a genre of Wadaiko performance in Yomitan Village, Okinawa. It illustrates how her own experience and interpretations of Okinawan rhythms, \u201csenses,\u201d and choreography have become foundations of the ethnic expressions manifested in the performance of Shimadaiko.<\/p>\n<p>Chapter Seven concludes this thesis. It argues that, transformed into the genre of neo-folk performing art, Okinawa Wadaiko performance has served to revive local communities, establish human relationship, construct local and individual
