of the development of Okinawan Studies during its early period (1860s-1940s) by examining two under-explored realms of scholarship. It focuses on the research and lives of lesser known Japanese (non Okinawan) scholars whose important contribution to Okinawan studies have not received proper attention. It also focuses on important, but still overlooked, research of well known Japanese scholars.<\/p>\n<p>In Chapter One, the research and life of Kawarada Moriharu, an official in the Ryukyuan han (domain) under the Ministry of Interior of the Meiji Government, are examined. It is shown that his involvement in the preparation for a Japanese exhibit at the Philadelphia International exhibition in 1876, including the collecting and sending of Ryukyuan artifacts, helped create an image of Ryukyu as a part of Japan.<\/p>\n<p>In Chapter Two, the research and life of Tashiro Antei are discussed. It is agued that the broad range of his research topics and activities were oriented towards policy making and governing of Okinawa and Yaeyama. These were also influenced by his training in pharmacognosy (\u672c\u8349\u5b66).<\/p>\n<p>In Chapter Three, the research of Sudo Riichi is examined. It is discussed that his research on the traditional mathematics of Ryukyu and his application of such knowledge to understanding of various aspects and issues of the head tax system of the Ryukyu kingdom were quite distinctive.<\/p>\n<p>In Chapter Four, the research of Iawasaki Takuji is re-examined. It is pointed out that his broad spectrum of research perspectives and methods were attributed to his training in meteorology.<\/p>\n<p>In Chapter Five, the research and life of Orii Hyojiro, who worked as a \u201ccollector\u201d of wildlife species for scientists, are discussed. It is pointed out that his research on natural environment and wildlife species of Okinawa and Amami was characterized by his attention to detail.<\/p>\n<p>In Chapter Six, the research and life of Kato Sango, a teacher at Okinawa Prefectural School, are examined. It is argued that his research did not receive proper credit because he discontinued research on Okinawa after leaving Okinawa. It is pointed out that his adherence to the holistic approach with emphasis on scientific description and his engagement in debates with Okinawan intellectuals were quite novel.<\/p>\n<p>In Chapter Seven, the research of Tajima Risaburo is re-examined in light of the fact that he, as a non-Okinawan, had to acquire the Okinawan language in order to carry out research on the Omoro shoshi. It is shown that he made tremendous efforts to produce Konkoukenshu, which is regarded as \u201cthe dictionary of Omoro words\u201d and the book had an important influence on Iha Fuyu. It is also argued that he engaged in detailed comparisons of \u201crepeated\u201d verses in the Omoro soshi and employed the method of comparative analogy between archaic Japanese and Okinawan words in understanding the Omoro soshi.<\/p>\n<p>In conclusion, it is argued that the research of these scholars were built upon modern academic disciplines such as pharmacognosy (\u672c\u8349\u5b66) and national learning (\u56fd\u5b66). This was reflected in their scientific and positivistic descriptions used and their attitudes and willingness towards incorporating a wide range of data including historical records. It is also argued that the method of comparative analogy employed by Tajima Riaburo was inherited by Iha Fuyu and is similar to methods used at present in the field of literature studies.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.84;\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"tab_div_mqai\" class=\"tab_content\" aria-labeledby=\"tab_li_mqai\" aria-hidden=\"true\"
