The doctoral program is divided into three research fields: Studies in Comparative Fine Arts, Ethnomusicology and Arts and Expression. Each field offers research concentration areas. Students select one area and will receive research guidance. One course is required of all students: Comprehensive Approach to Comparative Studies in Artistic Expression. In addition, candidates must complete three elective courses and be examined on their doctoral dissertation to receive their Ph.D. in Arts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

The studies of comparative Aesthetics and Fine Arts are based on the varied insights introduced by the analysis of value structures of art experience. It also strives to explore and reflect on the nature of Eastern art in the light of comparative typology of East and West. As well as examining the diverse interpretations of iconology by means of its present methodology, this program aims to make the current status of methodology the object of critical consideration.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

The ethnic and cultural studies<\/h4>\n

In ethnic and cultural studies, substantial research is undertaken on the role of arts and cultures of different ethnic groups by means of as much fieldwork as possible, and through the study of ethnology and literature. Such research, for example, might be conducted on Ryukyuan oral traditions (ancient ballads), Omoro, Kumiodori, and Ryuka. Another possible area of research is, for example, the origins of Utaki (sacred groves). Comparative studies borrowed from various research methods in the fields of linguistics, literature and anthropology are employed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

The area of music history<\/h4>\n

The program focuses on research on the historical development of Ryukyuan, Western and Japanese music, in the area of music history, based on the analysis and interpretation of original scores and other primary sources. The program is also based on the diachronic study of various performing techniques when the music being studied has been passed down to the present day.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

In the field of ethnomusicology, emphasis is placed primarily on the structural and formal study of ancient Ryukyuan classical music and its related field of Ryukyuan literature with its distinctive linguistic expression. Students may also investigate the musical structure of the various categories of Southeast Asian music that contributed to the historical structures of Ryukyuan music.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

The area of theories on ethnic performing arts<\/h4>\n

The research area of theories on ethnic performing arts, which constitutes a comprehensive study of the corpus of musical folk art performance, is an important field that has often escaped attention in current musicological study. Such research targets investigation into the theories on ethnic performing arts, including art and folk music, dance, theater and other manifestations of folk performances. Traditional Ryukyuan kumiodori and classical dance, as well as folk performing arts, constitute the core of the research material in this area.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

In the field of the musical arts, emphasis is placed on nurturing advanced creative abilities and performance skills on stage. Emphasis is also placed on research methods that support them from a theoretical perspective so that those who are in the program can eventually pursue independent professional careers as artists, researchers, and educators. In addition, the program also seeks to develop an ability to convey the meaning and role of musical arts as expressive activities rooted in society and the environment from the aspects of stage performance and production, and of research.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Dissertation title: \u201cA Study of Okinawa\u2019s Bubishi\uff1aMainly Relations with Okinawan Karate\u201d<\/p>\n

I am from Fujian Province, China. 12 years ago, following the footsteps of my ancestors, the \u201cKume Sanjyuroku Sei (36 Fujian clans of Kume),\u201d I came to Okinawa, \u201cthe land of Kyuyo,\u201d blessed with a rich natural and cultural environment. Here on the island I encountered karate, and learned that its origin was not in mainland Japan, but in Okinawa. Being in a unique geographical position, Okinawa has absorbed various cultures and created many new features of its own. Karate is one such cultural product that Okinawa is proud to present to the world. I was intrigued by this martial art and wanted to research karate from both theoretical and practical aspects. However, there were no universities or research institutes that specialized in karate, and I almost gave up on my dream. Fortunately, Professor Eikichi Hateruma of this doctoral program kindly became my academic supervisor, going beyond the existing research fields of this university, and I was able to complete my dissertation.

Dissertation title: \u201cA Historical Study about the Acceptance of Western Music in Modern Okinawa;A Look at Traditional Okinawan Music.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since enrolling in the Faculty of Music at OPUA as a member of the inaugural class, I have been researching the history of western music. After completing the MA program, I worked at the college level education field in Okinawa, all the while keeping a modest research going while attempting to figure out what kind of research was needed in this modern age. These efforts led me to challenge the traditional historical views that had hitherto been prevalent. Academic research in the history of modern Okinawan music is lagging behind other areas, and what is meant by the term \u201cmodern\u201d needs to be reevaluated so as to examine the nature of local culture after World War II.
\nIn my Ph.D. dissertation, I tried to depict Uchinanchu after the Meiji-era and how Okinawans were being made conscious of the \u201cWest\u201d, which led them to have a stronger self-consciousness.
